How to Get Efficient Heating and Cooling This Winter

Woman controlling home temperature with electronic deviceIn El Paso, the weather tends to be fickle, which can cause us to overwork our heating and cooling system. If you’re like many other people around the world and are attempting to go green, there are many things you can do to make sure your heater and AC work efficiently throughout winter and the new year.

Tip #1: Better Insulation

Oftentimes, homes become drafty or unable to maintain a steady temperature because of poor insulation. Essentially, insulation is what keeps your house warm when the heater is on and what keeps it cool in the summer when the AC is running. You can overuse your heating and cooling system when your home has poor insulation, meaning you waste more energy and spend more money. If you want to be more efficient, having the insulation in your home replaced or maintained is the way to go.

Tip #2: Seal Your Windows

Sometimes your house becomes drafty because of poor window sealing, which allows cold air to enter your home and warm air to leave it. You can purchase plastic window seals that are easy to install  and virtually invisible. These can make sure the cold air stays outside during the winter and the warm air stays in.

Tip #3: Become a Thermostat Pro

Misusing your thermostat can also be a root problem for  inefficient heating and cooling. Becoming a thermostat pro and knowing the best temperatures to set it at throughout the day can help. According to the Department of Energy, one of the best ways to save energy and money is to strategically set your thermostat while you’re asleep and while you’re away from home. Many people will leave it consistently at one temperature whether they’re home or asleep, but this can be incredibly wasteful. The Department of Energy recommends setting your thermostat back about ten degrees when you’re not home and when you’re sleeping to save energy every year.

Tip #4: Maintain Your Heating and Cooling System

Without a little TLC, your HVAC can begin to run inefficiently, working harder to perform its standard duties and wasting more energy, time, and money in the process. By maintaining your unit regularly, you can avoid inefficiency, costly repairs, and unclean air.
